How to plan a cold weather boat trip

Thursday, October 11, 2018

In North Idaho, we have a saying: If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes; it might change! This may sound silly, but in Sandpoint, it can be true. Autumn on Lake Pend Oreille might mean months of a downpour, or it could mean several months of sunshine, beautiful fall colors and extended boating season. If you’re planning to rent a boat this fall, you’ll need to plan your trip a little differently than you did in the summer. Here’s how:

Be prepared

With ever-changing weather, an October day might actually have some great sun and warm weather! Be prepared for the clouds to part, and don’t forget sunscreen and sun protection.

Pack a meal

If you end up with a gorgeous day, you’re not going to want to leave the water. Pack snacks and a meal for your day, or visit one of the great eateries on the water to refuel.

Bring layers

While you’re boating, the wind and wave spray might get quite chilly, but when stopped, the sun might warm you up. Pack layers, including water-proof jackets and blankets, so you’re prepared for any type of weather.

Be aware

Like we mentioned, the weather can change quickly in North Idaho. This means you need to be aware of possibly difficult conditions while out on the water. Check the weather reports before you head out and keep an eye on the horizons for rain clouds. If something looks dark and gray, headed your way, play it safe and head back to shore. You don’t want to be caught out on the lake in a storm!

Bring something to do

In the summer, you obviously want to get in the water to cool off. But when the weather’s already cool, you’ll want to concentrate on new activities. Bring fishing gear or games to play on the boat.
